Here’s a recent Malvern slate roofing project of ours
We were recently contacted by the owners of a well maintained, nice, late Victorian period home in Turner St Malvern …. a beautiful area. The nature strips are lined with many large mature shady trees…. just lovely. There are also many fine period homes in the street, not only late Victorian but also Edwardian style…. many with their original slate, and some re-roofed with new slate or terra-cotta tiles.
The home we were called to look at still had their original Delabole slate roof tiles on the front, sides and two triangular shaped ends at the rear. Delabole slate used for roofing on houses in the late 1800’s is now really soft, delaminating and very water absorbent. If you’re familiar with the Victorian period style of roof design you’ll know that these homes always had an internal area with a tapering centre gutter. This internal area is nearly always hidden from the street view and it’s also even difficult to see from the rear. The internal area of this home had already been re-roofed many years ago with colorbond corrugated iron… a dead giveaway that the remaining roof slates are probably not too good.
Many homeowners persist with keeping the original slate roofing at the front and sides of their homes whilst changing over to new corrugated iron on the unseen areas. Eventually though there just comes a time when it becomes inevitable that the slate needs to be completely renewed to stop leaking and prevent further internal damage.
As was the case with this particular home. The areas that still had the original slate had been leaking slightly and causing minor damage but a recent heavy storm had really caused havoc. After consulting with us we recommended that a new Spanish Del Carmen Ultra slate be installed. We also added a nice flat tail squint decorative slate pattern to the front and sides of the home. Installed new valley and hip flashings in monument color to match the slates, straightened up the frame a little as we did the work and the roof came up really nice.
The owners were very happy with the end result…. not to mention no more dreading when rain was forecast.
